Knight Marine Service was established in 1967. Horatio Knight, founder of the company, along with his wife Alice had a vision for the old coal yard and sought to bring the first Marina/Boatyard to the Midcoast area. He purchased the first Marine Travelift in 1968 and began hauling and storing boats for the winter.
Knight Marine Service also started out as a boat building operation with Horatio building his own “working tugboat†in 1971. The business continued to grow and he added a full service dock in 1977, that included a chandlery and gas and diesel pumps.
In 1979, Horatio added to the business with two inside boat storage buildings, and adding local boat transportation to our services. With Knight Marine Service continued growth the business flourished into the 2000’s with over 150 boats stored for the winter. In 2005, Horatio passed away leaving the business in his family’s hands. Along with a capable crew Knight Marine Service expanded once again to include a new state of the art Paint, Repair, Varnish building. In 2006 KMS received recognition from the Penobscot Bay Area Chamber Commerce, winning the Commerical/Industrial Improvement Award. Knight Marine Service continues to look at ways to be a vital and always improving company, essential to growth in the marine industry.
